Purpose Mentorship Program
Founded in 2021, the Purpose Mentorship Program at Belmont University is designed to help students navigate the complexities of post-graduate life with a clear sense of personal and professional purpose. By pairing Juniors and Seniors with experienced alumni mentors, the program provides a yearlong journey into the concepts of purpose, purposeful living, and personal coherence. Participants engage in monthly meetings, working through a six-part curriculum that addresses critical questions such as “What is Purpose?”, “Who am I?”, “What do I do?”, and “What is my North Star?”.
These interactive sessions include open-ended questions and homework assignments that encourage deep reflection and meaningful dialogue. Initially piloted within two colleges on campus, the program is now accessible to all students and alumni, regardless of their academic background. The Purpose Mentorship Program has become a cornerstone of Belmont’s Whole Person Formation programs.
The heart of this program lies in compiling and preparing an outstanding cohort of alumni mentors. Faculty and staff across campus recommend alumni, who then undergo a virtual training course on Belmont’s LMS (Canvas). This course provides a comprehensive overview of the Purpose Mentorship Program, including its history, curriculum, and the key skills and mindsets required to be an effective mentor.
Students interested in exploring purposeful living can sign up to participate, committing to monthly sessions and active engagement throughout the program. The student experience begins with the Purpose Area assessment, which helps identify their innate skills, passions, and aspirations. This assessment determines their primary Purpose Area from a list of five, forming the basis for pairing them with a suitable alumni mentor.
Promoted across campus via digital display boards and targeted communications within General Education courses like Junior Cornerstone and Senior Capstone, the program ensures broad visibility and accessibility. Once paired, students and alumni participate in monthly meetups, discussing questions and topics centered on purpose and purposeful living. These sessions not only provide guidance but also foster a supportive community where students can explore their identity and aspirations in depth, benefiting from the insights and experiences of their mentors.
