CANE COMMITMENT
The University of Miami’s Cane Commitment is a framework for recognizing the curricular, co-curricular, and extracurricular experiences that help students become effective, empathetic, and engaged graduates. Throughout their time at UMiami, students develop a comprehensive learner record that integrates intellectual and professional skills, socio-emotional awareness, and perspective-creating experiences for continuous growth. Within the Cane Commitment scaffolding, students work to master six competencies both in and out of the classroom: ethical judgment, professionalism, problem solving, reasoning, multicultural fluency, and civic-mindedness. The initiative helps students navigate campus resources and opportunities and allows them to take ownership of their undergraduate journey, holistically linking their learning to the various contexts in which it takes place.
Formulated and designed by a task force of faculty and staff, Cane Commitment challenges faculty to intentionally integrate and highlight one or more of the student competencies into their courses, inviting students to narrate and reflect upon their own academic journey using the comprehensive learner record of digital badges created for Cane Commitment.
Cane Commitment offers a compelling value proposition to prospective students, alumni, and employers for a University of Miami degree: ensuring that every UMiami graduate possesses a full suite of comprehensive intellectual, professional, and interpersonal capabilities.
Students gain capabilities across the six competencies through a mix of curricular, co-curricular, and extracurricular activities. Cane Commitment courses are tagged with their related competency, and many offer cocurricular experiences. Cane Commitment also tags its signature programs, i.e. extracurricular activities. To master a given competency, a student completes a tagged course and takes part in a tagged signature program. ach type of activity (curricular, co-curricular, and extracurricular) allows students to gain points to reach a level. Each competency comprises five levels.
